How to Activate AutoPIPE®

AutoPIPE Standard, AutoPIPE Advanced, AutoPIPE Nuclear, and add-ons are are all supported on the SELECT Server Licensing. If you are upgrading from an earlier version of the product, it is highly recommended that you do not install this product over the previous version. Older versions of AutoPIPE 6.3, 8.50, 8.51 and 8.60 will run under SELECT Server XM Licensing using the SELECT Server XM Gateway Service and the older SELECT licenses. For more information on the SELECT Server XM Gateway Service see the AutoPIPE Quick Start Guide.

The AutoPIPE products can be authorized as Standalone Licenses (formerly called Fixed Licenses), fixed to one user workstation or as Concurrent Licenses (formerly known as Floating Licenses) running from a local or Bentley hosted SELECT Server.

Users who have existing Floating Licenses and wish to convert the licenses to run on SELECT Server can contact Bentley Sales Support Center from the website at http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Services/Bentley+Sales+Support.htm. The following information is required when requesting SELECT Server licensing: Server Name, email address of the recipient of the SELECT Server license and the Serial Numbers to be added to the server.

Product activation is achieved by connecting to a SELECT Server, receiving a verification that your SELECT Server Name and Activation Key are correct, and successfully posting Usage logs. Product activation is not the same as checking out a license. This document describes how to configure AutoPIPE for activation. After initial configuration, AutoPIPE automatically and transparently tries to activate each time it runs, and runs unconstrained for a period of 30 days after its last successful activation. However, if activation is unsuccessful for a period of 30 days, AutoPIPE will not start until it is activated again.

Activating a product using the Product Activation Wizard

The Product Activation Wizard is designed to step users through the product activation process. After a product is installed, you must obtain a license and then activate that license. Obtaining the license alone is not enough to complete the process. This wizard eliminates the confusion and makes it clear that obtaining a license and activating a product are two essential steps.

The Product Activation Wizard opens automatically (unless the "Activate product using Bentley License Tool" check box is turned off) at the end of the product installation process. See the AutoPIPE Quick Start Guide for more information on installing AutoPIPE.

The first screen of the Product Activation Wizard offers four product activation options:

The wizard steps you through the activation process based on the options selected.

Error History

AutoPIPE v10.1.0

The following outline identifies all major errors in Release of AutoPIPE v10.1.0.

  • 331101 ASME NC/ND: C2r and C2b stress Indices may be incorrectly calculated for fillet welded and partial penetration welded branch connections

    AutoPIPE is evaluating C2r = B2r/0.5 and C2b = B2b/0.75 where it should be calculating C2r and C2b based on ASME NB-3683.8(c)

  • 334683:Non-linear analysis is incorrectly flagging supports as lifting off

ASME B31.3 (2014): Supports are incorrectly flagged as lifting-off and are removed for analysis sets for which "Remove Lift-off Supports" option is enabled

  • 339236 Allowable values at points using material specifications with more than one thickness range may be calculated incorrectly

Stress allowable values for points having a pipe ID which uses a material specification that has more than one thickness range may be calculated incorrectly. The piping standard may provide multiple values for minimum yield strength or ultimate strength based on the thickness of selected pipe, however AutoPIPE only uses a single value for the minimum yield and ultimate strength values.

  • 343639 ASME NC & ND: B2r and C2r stress indices may be calculated incorrectly for fillet welded and partial penetration welded branch connections

Stress indices B2r and C2r for fillet welded and partial penetration welded branch connections may be calculated incorrectly for ASME NC and ND piping codes. Program does not correctly follow the rules provided by ASME NC FIG. NC-3673.2(b)-1 for B2r calculations, and ASME NB-3683.8 (c) and (e) for C2r calculations.

  • 344919 Base material for SA508-1A material specification is incorrectly set as Low Alloy Steel instead of carbon steel

The SA508-1A ASME-designated piping steel is of carbon steel (GROUP-1-LC) composition according to ASME. However, AutoPIPE stores this as a low alloy steel (GROUP-1-A), which is inconsistent with ASME.

  • 346312 Snip & ChinaGB: Allowable values at points using material specifications with more than one thickness range may be calculated incorrectly

  • 353032 ASME NB: Global moment values are used for time history load case for non-tee points when "Modal/timestep tee summ" option is enabled

For ASME NB piping code, global moment values are used instead of local moment values for time history load case for all non-tee points when the result model option "Modal/timestep tee summ" is enabled.

  • 354225 ASME NB - Tee Moment Summation: Nested user-combinations having different summation for the nested combinations are not being combined correctly

The results for nested user combinations (user defined combinations inside another user defined combination) that have different summation method defined for the combinations defined inside the main combination are incorrect. This issue only applies when the "Modal/timestep tee summ" option is enabled.

  • 372995:ASME NB Thermal Transient Analysis: Gross discontinuity stress calculation does not consider the last time-step result for the last defined pipe

Gross discontinuity stress calculation for ASME NB thermal transient analysis does not consider the results for the last time-step for the last defined pipe. This defect is limited to ASME NB thermal transient analysis.

  • 407206:ASME NB: Global moment values are used for time history load case for non-tee points when "Modal/timestep tee summ" option is enabled.

For ASME NB piping code global moment values are used for time history load case for non-tee points when "Modal/timestep tee summ" option is enabled.

  • 407514:Program uses material properties set for valve to calculate pipe allowable values for far end of a valve.

Program uses material properties set for valve to calculate pipe allowable values for far end of a valve.

SELECT subscribers with a deployed (local) SELECT Server

If you are activating against a local SELECT Server, you must provide the proper Server Name and Activation Key. The Server Name and Activation Key, along with any proxy configuration information, can be obtained from your Site Administrator.

  5. Click Test Connection to verify the connection to the SELECT Server.
  6. Click Next. The Wizard Selections dialog box displays the information provided on the previous dialog boxes.
  7. Review the information and click Finish to activate the product.

SELECT subscribers activating against a hosted (Bentley) SELECT Server

If you are activating against a hosted (Bentley) SELECT Server, the Server Name is pre-populated but you must provide the proper Activation Key provided by the Bentley Sales Support Center.

  1. Enter the site activation key in the Site Activation Key field.
  2. If you are using HTTPS, enable the HTTPS (SSL) check box.
  3. If you are using a Proxy server to connect to the hosted SELECT Server, click the Proxy button and fill in the Proxy Server information then click OK.

Problem:

When performing a fluid transient, there is an option to choose, Linear Rise or Sine Rise

Which one should be used and why?

Solution:

See AutoPIPE help for details on this setting.

See the following results take from AutoPIPE example model, Apham1.dat, where the only changed made was the Rise setting:

Using Sine Rise, results on TIH curve and forcing function file

Using Linear Rise, results on TIH file

Conclusion:

AutoPIPE help section mentioned above provide good information about this setting. The decision on which setting to use, [S]ine or [L]inear, is ultimately up to the individual. Just know how this setting affects this TIH files and forcing function.

Comments, Questions, and Answers related to AutoPIPE's "Fluid Transient" Dialog screen

Pressing OK button closes the dialog and the following report is displayed about the transient. This file is saved in the same folder as the model (example: W1.THL):

In addition, the fluid transient utility automatically creates the relevant force-time histories (*.TIH) and can handle either a positive or negative shock wave at each point listed in the *.THL file, see example below (W1C01N.TIH):

Note:

1. TIH files are always in English units regardless of the Model units file specified on the General Options dialog screen. To see the unit conversion factor used, open the respective Units file (ex. SI.UNT) in any text editor (i.e. Notepad), and locate "Force" in the right column, read to the left for the factor conversion value to English units. See the following WIKI here for more details.

2. There is a complete Fluid transient (Water Hammer) tutorial and model example with complete details on the calculations performed by the program, etc.., please see the following AutoPIPE help section for details:

Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Modeling Approaches> Water Hammer (Time History) Example.

See the following WIKI page that address questions about this particular example.

Item #1: How do I accommodate 240 secs for time for Fluid Transient to reach full load in AutoPIPE?

Item #2: How does AutoPIPE account for the surge pressure pressure based on slow valve closure time in a Fluid Transient?

Item #3: Is it possible to perform a time history analysis on imposed support displacement movements in AutoPIPE?

Item #4: Could you possibly explain what output we are seeing when we look at the results from a force time history analyses in AutoPIPE?

Item #5: Does rotating the model after performing a Fluid transient analysis affect AutoPIPE's results?

Item #6: Why should the flow rate be positive or negative in AutoPIPE Fluid transient?

Item #7: What are the Fluid Transient load case assumptions in AutoPIPE?

Item #8: Should the fluid transient use Linear or Sine rise in AutoPIPE analysis?

Note: User must be logged into Bentley Communities to see Download button on the top right

Office 2013 does not support MS Access 97 file format and there is no means to open and view AutoPIPE result MDB files directly in Office 2013. This can be a potential problem for users who wish to export their analysis results to MDB (using File > Export > Results MDB) and view these in Ms Office. As a quick fix, we have upgraded these templates to Office 2003 format which is supported by Office 2013. This fix will be available in AutoPIPE CONNECT 10.00.00.10 and higher.

This downloaded file contains updated result MDB templates here for any users who would like to apply this update manually. They will have to manually place the attached 4 Access MDB files in program installation directory.

Problem:

Does AutoPIPE have my material?

Solution:

AutoPIPE has over 26 different piping codes with 39+ material files. Use one of the following options to find materials shipped with AutoPIPE.

Option #1: Materials by Piping Code

In order to know what materials are available by default per each piping code, see the following procedure:

1. Select, Tools> Model Options> General>

What is the name of the material file in a model?

  .

Example: See above dialog, Piping code = ASME B31.3, 2006, and Material file = B313-06

***Important***

DO NOT mix piping codes with any material library. When selecting a piping code the program will automatically select a default Material library. These default libraries are formatted specifically for the selected piping code. When using options #3 or #4 (from this WIKI here) the bases for the library is the default library. In short, if a material is missing from the default library use one of the 4 options (from this WIKI here) to add the missing material. Otherwise, mixing piping codes and non default libraries can potentially lead to unconservative results. New enhancements will be added to the program to prevent using any library with any piping code.

2. Select the following AutoPIPE help section:

Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Reference Information> Libraries> Code Dependent Pipe Materials>  select the material library found in step #1 from the listing provided:

Scroll down the listing to see all the materials that AutoPIPE has available by default for this specific material library.

Option #2: Search for currently available materials

Select the following AutoPIPE help section:

Help > Contents> Search Tab> enter "???????" (include the quotes), press List Topics button, double click on the selected topic from the list provided to see more information.

Example: 1. search for Aluminum, 2. Double click on a Topic, 3. Scroll down to see highlighted selection.

Product(s):AutoPIPE,
Version(s):ALL
Environment:N/A

Problem:

What value would be entered into the Time history dialog screen for "Duration"?

Solution:

Please see the following AutoPIPE help section:
Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Modeling Approaches> Modeling Approaches> Water Hammer (Time History) Example> Executing Water Hammer Example (apham1).

Highly suggested as one of your first time history analysis that you read the entire section on this example and actually perform the example as explained in the online help, the file is located at C:\Bentley\AutoPIPE V8i SELECTseries\ Example\Apham1.dat.

After performing this example you will understand clearly how to calculate the time history duration.

For those time sensitive people, as mentioned in step #11 of the Executing Water hammer (time history) example document,  "Duration"  =  0.443 (First period, 0.384 sec, plus water hammer duration 0.059 sec),

These values can be found :

a: Water hammer duration value 0.059 sec comes from the THL file:

B. First period 0.384 sec comes from the Frequency output report

Under some circumstances, this duration time may need to be increased to ensure to capture all the time needed for the transient and 1st period to occur. The results should not change if a longer duration than needed is specified.

Question:

For each time history load case user can assign 4 transient files. What Duration Time should be used if more than 1 transient file is assigned to a Time history load case.

Answer:

Yes, the duration should include the total time of the transient + first mode.

Locate the highest time value found in 1 of 4  *.THL files; under "TIME AT END OF FLUID TRANSIENT". Add to this "time of the first period from Frequency report" as outlined above

Applies To
Product(s):AutoPIPE,
Version(s):ALL
Environment: N/A
Area: Warning
Original Author:Bentley Technical Support Group

Problem:

The following warning appears when running a Time History analysis:

---------------------------
Warning
---------------------------
W801-58:  Smallest timestep for TPCE07  .TIH file =   .000617 <.000625002 .
Consider a smaller user defined(non-automatic) analysis timestep.
This may indicate that modal cut-off frequency is not adequate.

OK
---------------------------

 How to resolve this issue?

Solution:

The following is based on a single example that provides the user with understand what is occurring, and how to fix it.

After receiving this error message, create an output report that contains the Analysis summary sub report. In the sub-report find the following:

     TIME HISTORY LOAD CASES :
     -------------------------

Number of load cases analyzed :  1

     Load case 1  -  M1

Time history load file 1         : xxx
Time History Load Type           : 5. Imposed Force
Number of TIH files of this type :   9

Time history load file 2         : TPB
Time History Load Type           : 5. Imposed Force
Number of TIH files of this type :   4

Time history load file 3         : TPC
Time History Load Type           : 5. Imposed Force
Number of TIH files of this type :   3

     Analysis duration    :     9.0000 sec
Analysis time step   :   0.000625 sec       (Automatic)
Output time step     :   0.000625 sec       (Automatic)
Number of time steps :      14400
     Modal damping ratio  :     0.0200
     ZPA                  : Yes

     Captured modal mass (%) :     65.24

     Added  missing mass (%) :      0.00

In this example the analysis duration was found to be time step = 0.000625 sec.

From the warning above, note: TPCE07  .TIH file =   .000617 <.000625002.

TPC = name of fluid transient

E07 = node point where warning is occurring

TIH = file extension name

0.000617 = time calculated from the TIH file

Open the THL file mentioned above (ex. TPC.THL), search for the node point mentioned in the warning (ex. E07), The following was found:

Existing TPA CONVEYING Line W1004466
3     TIH FILE      SCALE      DX        DY        DZ     TIME(sec)
B08       TPCB08        1.000    -0.707    -0.707     0.000   0.079889
E04 F     TPCE04F       1.000     0.000    -1.000     0.000   0.081416
E07       TPCE07        1.000     0.000    -1.000     0.000   0.082444

TIME AT END OF FLUID TRANSIENT :   0.083061 sec

Calculte duration from node point to node point to end of fluid transient:

B08 to B04 = 0.081416 - 0.079889 = 0.001527 sec
B04 to E07 = 0.082444 - 0.081416 = 0.001028 sec
E07 to End = 0.083061 - 0.082444 = 0.000617sec

Compare results: Actual value in transient vs Value automatically calculated

0.000617 < 0.000625 was found to be true.

Fix as recommended in warning message, open Dynamic Analysis dialog screen, select the Time History tab> change the following:

Analysis Steps (s) = from Automatic to value smaller than mentioned in warning message, ex. 0.00061 sec
Output Steps (s) =  from Automatic to value smaller than mentioned in warning message, ex. 0.00061 sec

Run the analysis, remember it may take a bit of time to process, the application may appear to have stopped,  just leave the mouse and keyboard alone until analysis is finished. The Warning message should not have appeared now. continue review with analysis results.

Note: this WIKI did not address the "Captured Modal Mass", typically stress engineers will strive to have between 75% and 100% participating modal mass; suggest appropriate changes to the Model and / or Modal Analysis settings.
